Video Clip: Sparkline Analysis of MLK Speech

In November, we included a video clip where Nancy Duarte analyzed various presentations with her brilliant sparkline analysis technique. The sparkline (invented by Edward Tufte and often used when displaying stocks) is an example of information design, a powerful tool for data heavy (financial, scientific, etc.) presentations.

Here, Nancy does a more in-depth analysis of the I Have A Dream Speech using the sparkline. You can literally see the “shape” of the speech and its power.

Video Clip: John Truby on Premise, Desire and Need

John Truby is one of the leading screenwriting teachers and “Story Doctors” in Hollywood, having consulted on more than 1000 scripts. He is the author of the soon-to-be seminal book Anatomy of Story, where he breaks down the deep structure of genre writing, powerful story, and memorable dialogue.

Here, he speaks about the importance of a compelling premise and especially a powerful need. A premise is a one sentence summary of the entire story, describing the goals of the main character. However, a premise is made compelling not by the goals of the character, but the tension between what the character desire and what the characters need.
